In late 2016, consultants were engaged to develop Terms of Reference (ToR) for the restructuring, expanding and strengthening of the Caribbean Academy of Law and Court Administration (CALCA). As one of the measures to move towards the goal of strengthening the organization, the Rt. Hon. Sir Dennis Byron, President of the CCJ, along with the CALCA Management Committee spearheaded by the Hon Mr Justice Anderson (Chair) and the Hon. Mr Justice Wit (Ranking Member), have issued instructions for CALCA’s incorporation as a legal body, separate from the Court. The organization will also be rebranded as the CCJ Academy of Law, to be informally referred to as the CCJ Academy, to emphasize its emanation as the educational arm of the Court.
The CCJ Academy will host its first session on November 14, 2017 at the Trinidad and Tobago Judicial Education Institute (TTJEI). Professor Sarah Derrington, Academic Dean and Head of TC Bernie School of Law at the University of Queensland will deliver a lecture on “Current Issues in Admiralty Law.” The session is sponsored in part by the Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project.
The objective of the lecture is to bring together judges from the southern Caribbean to share and exchange ideas on critical issues of Maritime Law in the Caribbean Seas. This lecture will also provide a forum for the judges from the respective territories to further share information and experiences since the relevant areas of international maritime law, including the law of the sea, marine environmental law and shipping law differ within the Caribbean region.
