The Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project will host a regional consultation to discuss the Criminal Magisterial Bench Book at the Trinidad and Tobago Judicial Education Institute (TTJEI) on Saturday March 17, 2018 from 8 am.
It is expected that magistrates from across the region will attend the consultation which will be facilitated by the Honourable Mme. Justice Alice Yorke-Soo Hon, Justice of Appeal; the Honourable Mr. Justice Mark Mohammed, Justice of Appeal; Mr. Roger Ramgoolam, Course Director, Criminal Procedure and Practice, Hugh Wooding Law School; and Mr. Jonathan Soo-Hon, Attorney-at-Law, Legal Officer, Ministry of Finance, all from Trinidad and Tobago.
The consultation is not meant to be a teaching exercise, but rather facilitate the following:
- any comments by magistrates on the accuracy of the contents; and
- any suggestions and comments by magistrates on whether focus should be shifted to more thorny/problematic areas or whether focus should be shifted away from less-problematic areas.
The magistrates will review the Magisterial Bench Book, chapter by chapter, covering all of the relevant jurisdictions.
After the consultation, the next stage would be the compilation of the suggestions, as part of the editorial process, in preparation for the publication and official launch of the Bench Book.
