The Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project will officially hand over 10 Liberty systems to the judiciary of Guyana on Monday January 28, 2019. The hand-over ceremony takes place at 9:45 am at the Pegasus Hotel Guyana, Georgetown, Guyana.
The Honourable Mme. Justice Yonette Cummings – Edwards, Chancellor of the judiciary of Guyana will be the feature speaker at the event. Other speakers at the ceremony will include Her Excellency Lilian Chatterjee, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana and Mrs. Gloria Richards-Johnson, Director, JURIST Project among others.
The equipment was installed from November 11-14, 2018 in 10 courts across Guyana – nine in Georgetown and one in Berbice. The systems will allow the courts to capture, store and retrieve digitally recorded audio of courtroom proceedings.
Following the handing-over ceremony, the Project in collaboration with the judiciary of Guyana will host a feedback meeting with judges and magistrates on use of the equipment and procedural manuals on Tuesday January 29, 2019. On Wednesday January 30, 2019 a meeting and sensitisation session will be held with stakeholders from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), police, prisons, Bar Association and attorneys-at-law among others to discuss the introduction of the equipment to the judiciary and any resulting procedural changes. Both sessions will be held at the Pegasus Hotel.
The JURIST Project is working with judiciaries in the region to support their efforts to improve court administration and strengthen the ability of the courts and the judiciary to resolve cases efficiently and fairly. In this regard, the Project has committed to support the judiciary in Guyana in reducing to zero the current backlog that exists in the Demerara and Berbice Supreme Courts.
