The Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project is pleased to support the Judicial Education Institute (JEI) of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) in hosting a three-day conference for all magistrates of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
The workshop will be held from May 28-30, 2019 at the Marriott Beach Resort and Spa in St. Christopher and Nevis.
The training will be conducted in two components. The first (one day session) will cover such areas such as Access to Justice, Bias, Trust and Fairness in the Administration of Justice, Vulnerable Groups and Equality, Mindfulness and Social Inclusion. The second will be a comprehensive, two-day session on the newly developed Criminal Bench Book for Magistrates and Parish Court Judges in the Caribbean Region, produced under the aegis of the JURIST Project.
The JEI is of the view that the Bench Book is an important tool by which justice will be enhanced. It will allow critical information relating to the norms for conducting a fair and just criminal trial to be readily available, thus promoting transparency, accountability, and consistency in the criminal justice system. The JEI stated that training in this area will only assist in building capacity amongst its magistrates.
The faculty delivering the training includes proven experts in the areas. Lead presenters for the training on the Bench Book will be Justices of Appeal from Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Mme. Justice Alice Yorke-Soo Hon and the Honourable Mr. Justice Mark Mohammed.
