The Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project is supporting the Guyana judiciary in its reforms to reduce delay and backlog with the donation and installation of 10 digital audio recording systems in 10 courtrooms across Guyana. Nine of the systems will be installed in Georgetown and one in Berbice.
The system will be installed from November 11-14, 2018 and once in place, the courts will be able to capture, store and retrieve digitally recorded audio of courtroom proceedings.
The Project is also providing training to judicial officers and court staff in use of the equipment. The first training will be delivered to judicial officers on Wednesday November 14, 2018. The objectives of this training are to ensure that judicial officers understand the purpose of producing a digital record and how to manage the digital recording process. Additionally, they will learn about the functions of the Liberty playback software and transcript formatting. Facilitators for the training will be the Honourable Mr. Justice (ret) Micheal J. Nelson and Mr. Collins Ijoma, Technical Consultant.
The second training takes place on Thursday November 15, 2018 and will focus on court support staff. This training will allow court staff to manage the digital recording process; understand the functions of Liberty recording software and become skilled in best practices in annotating a digital recording.
Finally, court transcription staff will be trained in producing audio copies of court proceedings on Friday November 16, 2018. The training will highlight the many ways the equipment can assist staff in transcript formatting among other functions.
All the workshops will be conducted in Georgetown, Guyana and, the second and third trainings will be delivered by Mr. Collins Ijoma and his associate, Mr. Jeffery Newman.
