The JURIST Project, in partnership with the judiciary of Barbados, UN Women and the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers (CAJO) will host a consultative meeting on the draft Gender Equality Protocols for Magistrates and Judges in Barbados. The consultative meeting will be held on Monday, June 26, 2017 from 2 pm to 4 pm in the Judge’s Lounge at the Supreme Court of Barbados.
The draft Protocols were formally handed over to the Honourable Sir Marston, Chief Justice of Barbados on April 12, 2017.
The Honourable Mr. Justice Adrian Saunders, Judge, Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) and CAJO Chairman together with Mrs. Tonni Ann Brodber-Hemans, Deputy Representative, UN Women will sit on the panel, which will be chaired by Sir Marston.
The purpose of the consultative meeting is two-fold. Firstly, it will provide the judiciary with the opportunity to provide feedback on the draft Protocols. Secondly, it will allow the JURIST Project, CAJO and UN Women to provide background information on the draft Protocols and answer any questions from the judiciary.
The draft Gender Equality Protocols for Magistrates and Judges is the first of its kind in the CARICOM region and Barbados is the first CARICOM country to have gender protocols developed for its judiciary. The draft Protocolsare intended to assist judges and magistrates to use a gender perspective to safeguard the ability of both women and men to have equal access to justice as well as assist the judiciary in ensuring that their decisions result in equitable outcomes for both men and women.
