The Canadian funded Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project will officially hand over equipment to support the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court’s (ECSC) recovery efforts to operationalize the court offices in the Commonwealth of Dominica, which was destroyed by hurricane Maria.
The hand-over ceremony takes place on Tuesday February 12, 2019 at 8:45 am at the Dominica High Court, Bayfront, Roseau, Dominica. The Honourable Mme. Justice Dame Janice Periera, Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) will be the feature speaker at the event.
Following the passage of hurricane Maria in September, 2017, the court offices in Dominica were ruined which led to the stagnation of judicial business in that country. The JURIST Project, following discussions with the Honourable Dame Janice Pereira, Chief Justice, ECSC offered to assist the Dominican courts in resuming its operations.
The JURIST Project is working with judiciaries in the region to support their efforts to improve court administration and strengthen the ability of the courts and the judiciary to resolve cases efficiently and fairly. In this regard, the Project assisted with the outfitting of two courts in Dominica as well as with the purchase of equipment to automate their processes. Additionally, the Project partnered with the ECSC by providing the jurisdiction with a disaster recovery plan which will be adopted to optimise their capabilities for business continuity in the event of another disaster.
