CJ WANTS NEW SYSTEMS TO PREVENT BACKLOG OF CASES

Reducing the backlog of cases in Barbados’ court system, does not get to the root of the problem.

That’s the view of Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson, who is instead suggesting that new systems are needed to prevent the backlog from happening again.

Sir Marston was speaking during the closing ceremony of a two week training course for mediators, or people who attempt to resolve disputes outside of court.

More than 40 people participated in the workshops, which were hosted by the Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening, or Jurist Project.

Sir Marston also revealed that Barbados could soon be entering into a mediator sharing agreement with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.

Barbados and regional states are set to benefit from funding from the European Union through a project that will lead to a reduction in the backlog of cases in the criminal justice system.

First secretary of the EU delegation to Barbados, Luca Pierantoni, provided some insight into the project during a recent donation by the Regional Security Systems to the Dodds Prison.
