JAMAICA – BUREAU OF GENDER AFFAIRS TO WORK ALONGSIDE ENTITIES INVESTIGATING SEXUAL OFFENCES

The Bureau of Gender Affairs is being restructured to enable it to work more closely with entities involved in the investigation of sexual offences.

Gender Minister Olivia Grange, who has portfolio responsibility for the agency, said this will include assigning social officers to the Bureau.

She made the announcement on Friday during the Caribbean Court of Justice local launch of the Model Guidelines for Sexual Offence Cases in the Caribbean Region.

In an interview with JIS News after her presentation, Ms. Grange said there are instances where cases are not properly handled because there is not enough coordination between entities.

She added that the trauma endured by sexual offence victims and their family requires specialised support.

Miss Grange wants the Bureau of Gender Affairs to be integrally involved with all of the agencies in addressing these issues.
